🍂 October Newsletter: ADHD Awareness Month

October is ADHD Awareness Month, an opportunity to learn more about Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), challenge misconceptions, and promote greater understanding and support for people with ADHD.
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that can affect attention, organization, impulse control, activity level, and other aspects of daily functioning. It can look different from person to person, and people with ADHD have a wide range of strengths, needs, and experiences.
🧠 ADHD Is More Than “Being Distracted”
ADHD can affect more than attention. It may impact organization, time management, task completion, memory, impulse control, and focus.
At the same time, people with ADHD may have strengths such as creativity, curiosity, energy, problem-solving, and unique ways of thinking.
💡 Awareness Starts With Understanding
Creating a supportive environment begins with listening and avoiding assumptions. Instead of asking, “Why can't you just focus?”, we can ask:

“What would make this easier for you?”
Small changes can make a meaningful difference. Depending on the person and setting, helpful strategies may include:
✔️ Breaking large tasks into smaller steps
✔️ Using calendars, reminders, and visual schedules
✔️ Providing clear and specific instructions
✔️ Allowing appropriate movement or sensory breaks
✔️ Reducing unnecessary distractions
✔️ Offering flexibility when possible
✔️ Focusing on strengths as well as challenges
🌟 This Month's Reminder
ADHD does not define a person's intelligence, potential, or worth.
Awareness is more than knowing what ADHD stands for. It means recognizing that people experience ADHD differently and creating spaces where individuals feel understood, respected, and supported.
📚 Take a Moment to Learn
This October, take a few minutes to learn from reputable ADHD resources, listen to people with ADHD, and share accurate information with others.
The more we understand, the better we can support one another.
🍁 October Reflection
